International
Volunteer Program
Frequently
Asked Questions
Why do people
volunteer?
It's a personal
choice. Some specifically want to help others and gain on-site work experience
at the same time. Others emphasize learning how others live and view the
world or improving their language skills.
Do I have
to provide for room and board?
No. The agency
supplies room and board for the six-to-eight week volunteer period.
Do you
need to be a student?
No. The only
requirement is to be at least 18 years old. There is no upper age limit.
Do we need
to speak the language of the host country?
Yes. At least
two years of college-level language classes (or their equivalent) is required.
You need to be understood as well as understand to perform your work assignment.
Does the
International Volunteer Program represent a religious organization?
No. We are
a non-for-profit organization created in 1851 by the French Community
in San Francisco. We started International Volunteer Program in 1991 as
an exchange program between France and the US. Because of the growing
demand from non-French speaking students, we expended the program to the
United Kingdom.
What positions
do you have available?
Positions vary
and increase each year. An emphasis is placed on identifying assignments
that utilize individuals' personal and professional goals. However, as
placements are limited and are assigned in a first come, first place basis,
volunteers must be receptive to any assignment.
How do
I apply?
Fill out the application
form that you can download or request via e-mail.
I am 17,
can I get involved in the program?
You may apply
for admission while you are still 17. But you must be 18 before departing
for England, France or California.
Do you
have scholarships?
No. But as
a non-profit organization, we keep our costs low and are particularly
proud that the program cost is half the price of most summer exchange
programs.
Do I get
credit with my university?
Some American
universities give academic credit. Check with your academic adviser. We
will be pleased to provide any additional information you may need.
Can I go
during the fall?
No. It's a
summer program only.
